Sometimes in family law cases, where parents can not reach agreement about the arrangements for their children, the court will assign and Independent Children's Lawyer (ICL) to represent the best interests of the child in court.

This lawyer does not represent either the mother or the father. They interview the child and may talk to their parents as well as other people who interact with the child such as teachers, grandparents, doctors and psychologists.

An ICL does their best to lessen the trauma to the child caused by their parents going to court. They may be asked to assist in preparing a report for the judge to help them make their decisions about what is best for the welfare of the child.
