Mayeight! A new Movember Foundation initiative reaching out to men

Giving blokes a nudge to catch up with a mate

GUS Worland has been calling for men to speak up about mental health issues since he lost a best mate, Angus Roberts.

Roberts killed himself on the day of his son’s final HSC exam and Worland says when that happens, you can't help but feel some guilt.

Since 2016, the Triple M Grill Team host has been on a mission to find out why we’re losing our men.

Movember Foundation get behind Mayeight!

Last week Worland used his radio presence to encourage men to reach out and talk to a mate. He was promoting the initiative launched in 2016 by the Movember Foundation.Mayeight!

In only it's second year, MAYEIGHT!!, predictably takes place on May 8, and aims to improve the social networks of Aussie men by giving blokes a nudge to catch up with a mate.

It is the founders' goal for May 8 to be known as an excellent 'date to catch up with a mate'.

“We’re losing eight Aussie males a day and a lot of that I believe is [because] we’re not sharing how we truly feel,” said Gus Worland.

“We’re hopeless at creating the space required to have a proper conversation.

“It’s not having the answers, it’s about being a good listener.”

Man Up!

As part of his quest, Worland made a documentary for ABC TV, Man Up.  Along the way, he uncovered a shocking truth; suicide is the leading killer of Australian men aged under 45, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and heart disease.

Worland said he received 14,000 letters after Man Up aired on ABC TV.

The documentary is set to be rescheduled this year.
