A 28 year-old woman in Egypt has applied for divorce just two weeks into her marriage because her husband does all the household chores.
Khaleej Times, one of the leading English Dailies in the UAE, reported the wife complained to family court judges in Al-Qāhirah Al-Jadida (New Cairo), a town just outside the Egyptian capital.
She was already bored of him she said.
“He cooks, cleans, sweeps and does the laundry.”
Her 31 year-old husband, who runs a clothing store, apparently cramped the wife’s style as he did not give her “the freedom to handle my home affairs, I feel like a guest in a hotel.”
The disgruntled wife continued:
“He is the ‘woman of the house’ and I’m hating my life with him. We’ve been only married for two weeks, and he is either cooking or doing the laundry because he knows how to sort the washable clothes by colour. He then irons the clothes, sweeps, and arranges the food in the fridge.”
His habit of regularly moving furniture around the house was also of considerable annoyance to the new wife.
“I sit down watching him all day while he moves stuff around looking very happy”, she told the judges.
Her husband’s clothes shop was doing well, and his staff allowed him to spend time at home she explained.
The wife is fed up and wants out.
She has applied for a khula, a legal procedure which allows Muslim women to divorce their husbands by returning their mahr – a mandatory payment to wives made by Muslim husbands or their families when they get married.
